Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge Beachfill
USACE is dredging more than one million cubic yards of sand from the Delaware Bay and using it to build a dune and berm at the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge on behalf of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Storms have caused breaches and degraded part of the marsh, which is an important stopover site for migratory birds and provides protected breeding habitat for threatened and endangered species. Prime Hook’s habitat features include salt marsh, freshwater marsh, ponds and impoundments, wooded swamps and upland grasslands and forest.
