Francis E. Walter Dam, owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, operates as a system in conjunction with Beltzville Dam, located in Lehighton PA, to reduce flooding in the downstream communities along the Lehigh River.

The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District announced an update to the 2022 Francis E. Walter Dam recreation plan.

Due to significant rainfall on Aug. 5, the Army Corps is reinstating the 4th increment of the recreation plan. The increment was previously canceled due to insufficient water storage in the reservoir behind the dam. As a result, fisheries enhancement releases are being held Aug. 6-12 and a whitewater release will be held on Sept. 4.

It’s important to note that all recreational releases are subject to change based on the potential need for flood control operations.
