Army Corps shares details for final water releases of recreation season

Francis E. Walter Dam, owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, operates as a system in conjunction with Beltzville Dam, located in Lehighton PA, to reduce flooding in the downstream communities along the Lehigh River.

The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District shared details for the final recreational water releases (also known as the ‘mega release’) from the Francis E. Walter Dam.

The current plan for the final releases of the season is as follows (all releases are subject to change based on the potential need for flood control operations):  

  • OCT 5, Thursday Afternoon – releases will be increased/ramped up to 1000 cubic feet per second beginning at 3:00 p.m.
  • OCT 6, Friday Morning – releases will be increased to 3500 cubic feet per second (plus inflow, max 4000 cubic feet per second) beginning at 1:00 a.m.
  • OCT 6, Friday Afternoon – releases will be decreased to 2500 cubic feet per second (plus inflow) beginning at 1:00 p.m.
  • OCT 7, Saturday Morning – releases will be decreased to 2000 cubic feet per second (plus inflow, max 2500 cubic feet per second) beginning at 1:00 a.m.
  • OCT 7, Saturday Afternoon – releases will be decreased to 1200 cubic feet per second (plus inflow) beginning at 1:00 p.m.
  • OCT 8, Sunday Morning – releases will be decreased to 800 cubic feet per second (plus inflow) beginning at 1:00 a.m.
  • OCT 8, Sunday Afternoon – releases will be decreased to 600 cubic feet per second (plus inflow) beginning at 1:00 p.m.
  • OCT 9, Monday Morning – releases will be decreased to 400 cubic feet per second (plus inflow) beginning at 1:00 a.m.
  • OCT 9, Monday Afternoon – releases will be decreased to 100 cubic feet per second (plus inflow) beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Depending on rainfall/hydrologic conditions, some releases on Sunday and Monday could be higher. Updates will be posted to the Francis E. Walter Dam Facebook page. USACE anticipates drawing down the reservoir elevation to normal winter pool level by early to mid-next week.
