The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District has awarded a  $54.4 million contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, Ill. to complete periodic nourishment of the Barnegat Inlet to Little Egg Inlet, (Long Beach Island), Coastal Storm Risk Management project.

The project is a joint effort of the Army Corps’ Philadelphia District, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the municipalities on Long Beach Island. Work is designed to maintain the dune and berm system in the communities and reduce the risk of storm damages to coastal infrastructure.

The contract calls for dredging more than 1,750,000 million cubic yards of sand from the approved offshore sand borrow area. The sand will be pumped onto the beach at a number of the most eroded portions of the project within Harvey Cedars, Beach Haven and Long Beach Township. The sand is then graded into an engineered dune and berm template, which is designed to reduce damages from coastal storm events. The contract also includes options for the placement of additional sand in other areas. Dune crossovers/access paths, fencing, dune grass planting, and other features will be installed/repaired as part of the contract.  Work on the beaches is expected to begin in the Fall or Winter timeframe and last for approximately 180 days.
