The primary purpose of the Francis E. Walter Dam is flood control. Recreation is a secondary mission as whitewater and fishery releases are planned every year.

The U.S. Army Corps Engineers Philadelphia District announced it has enough water storage to hold a whitewater release Aug. 25 as well as increase fisheries enhancements from the Francis E. Walter Dam.

The Corps updated the recreation plan, which states whitewater releases in late August and in September will be added if adequate water storage is accumulated in the reservoir. The fisheries enhancements increase from 50 to 100 cubic feet per second from July 28 through Aug. 3.

The Corps will announce at a later date if it is able to hold additional whitewater and fisheries releases. To see the plan or view updates, visit the F.E. Walter web page or Facebook page.
