Army Corps cancels end of season whitewater release

The primary purpose of the Francis E. Walter Dam is flood control. Recreation is a secondary mission as whitewater and fishery releases are planned every year.

 

The U.S. Army Corps Engineers Philadelphia District announced it does not have enough water storage to hold a whitewater release Sept. 2 from the Francis E. Walter Dam.

The recreation plan for the Francis E. Walter Dam has three whitewater release dates in September contingent on having enough water storage: Sept. 1, 2, and 14. The Corps will hold the Sept 1 release as planned and will announce at a later date if it is able to hold a whitewater release Sept. 14. The Corps has already held 21 whitewater releases this year.
