Published Sept. 30, 2025

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Curtin Maritime Corp. for $10.8 million to conduct maintenance dredging of portions of the Chesapeake Bay approach channels as part of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal federal navigation project.

Approximately 500,000 yards of sediment will be mechanically dredged from the approach channels from Reedy Point to Pooles Island.  The sediment will be placed on scows and barges, and eventually hydraulically pumped to an Army Corps owned and operated dredged material placement facility at Pearce Creek in Cecil County, MD.

Dredging is estimated to begin in the December 2025 and be completed by the February 2026.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District maintains several hundred miles of channels across the Delaware Valley under its navigation program, which enables the safe and reliable flow of maritime commerce. The Chesapeake and Delaware or "C&D" Canal connects the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay and Port of Baltimore. The waterway includes a channel 35 feet deep and 450 feet wide.
