The primary purpose of the Francis E. Walter Dam is flood control. Recreation is a secondary mission as whitewater and fishery releases are planned every year.

The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District has updated the recreation plan for the Francis E. Walter Dam.

The Corps updated the plan, which states whitewater and fisheries releases will be scheduled if enough water storage is accumulated in the reservoir. Precipitation throughout the spring and summer has allowed the Corps to add the first five increments of the plan, which includes 4 additional whitewater releases and fisheries enhancement water releases from July 26-Sept 12. The additional releases include:

1)   Whitewater event on Aug. 23 (650 cubic feet per second) and increase fisheries enhancement releases to 100 cubic feet per second for the period of July 26-Aug. 1. (Fisheries enhancement releases will be the augmentation amount plus inflow up to a maximum of 300 cubic feet per second).

2)   Whitewater event on Aug. 24 (650 cubic feet per second) and increase fisheries enhancement releases to 100 cubic feet per second for the period of Aug. 2-8.

3)   Whitewater event on Aug. 30 (650 cubic feet per second) and increase fisheries enhancement releases to 100 cubic feet per second for the period of Aug. 9-15.

4)   Whitewater event on Aug. 31 (650 cubic feet per second) and increase fisheries enhancement releases to 100 cubic feet per second for the period of Aug. 16-22.

5)   Increase fisheries enhancement releases to 100 cubic feet per second for the period of Aug. 23-Sept 12.

The Corps will announce at a later date if it is able to hold additional whitewater and fisheries releases.
