• Army Corps conducts environmental restoration through Handshake Program

    The Francis E. Walter Dam, owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was constructed approximately 60 years ago. During the construction process, millions of cubic yards of sediment and rock were excavated from two nearby borrow areas to build the earthen embankment of the dam. For the past 11 years, the Army Corps, Pheasants Forever Chapter 803, and other non-profit organizations have worked to reclaim and restore these borrow areas by removing invasive species and planting native and pollinator plant species that enhance wildlife habitat.  
  • Army Corps awards contract for Ocean City, Sea Isle City, and Strathmere beachfill

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois for $32.5 million to complete periodic nourishment of two projects in Cape May County, N.J. The contract calls for dredging more than 2.4 million cubic yards of sand and placing on the beaches in Ocean City, Strathmere, and Sea Isle City.   
  • Army Corps awards contract for Rehoboth and Dewey beach nourishment

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company LLC of Oak Brook, Illinois for $7.21 million to conduct periodic nourishment of the Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach Coastal Storm Risk Management project. The project is a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
  • Army Corps awards contract for Seven Mile Island beachfill

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, Ill. for $7.5 million to complete periodic nourishment of the Townsends Inlet to Cape May Inlet (Avalon and Stone Harbor) Coastal Storm Risk Management project. The project is a joint effort of the Army Corps’ Philadelphia District, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the communities of Avalon and Stone Harbor.
  • Army Corps dive team conducts inspections at Kwajalein Atoll

    The USACE Forward Response Technical Dive Team conducted above and below water inspections of waterfront infrastructure from Aug. 13-26 at the U.S. Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The dive team performs underwater inspections around the world on behalf of the Army’s Installation Management Command.
  • Army Corps updates water release schedule at Francis E. Walter Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District updated the 2019 Francis E. Walter Dam recreation plan. The Army Corps updated the plan, which states whitewater and fisheries releases will be scheduled if enough water storage is accumulated in the reservoir. Precipitation throughout the summer has enabled the Army Corps to schedule multiple increments of the plan.
  • UPDATE: swimming area reopened at Blue Marsh Lake

    Swimming at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area of Blue Marsh Lake was re-opened on Aug. 6, 2019. The Swimming Area was restricted due to high bacteria levels. Water tests were conducted daily until the levels returned to a safe level for public use.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, Ill. for $7.6 million to complete periodic nourishment of the Cape May Inlet to Lower Township (Cape May City) Coastal Storm Risk Management project. The project is a joint effort of the Army Corps’ Philadelphia District, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
