• Army Corps awards contract to repair Brigantine dune and berm project

    PHILADELPHIA (September 7 , 2017) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District awarded a contract to Weeks Marine Inc. for $9.5 million to repair the dune and berm project on Brigantine Island. The project is a joint effort of the Army Corps’ Philadelphia District and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Update on mitigation measures in Margate/Absecon Island

    PHILADELPHIA (AUG. 14, 2017) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Philadelphia District posted the below update regarding ongoing temporary mitigation measures in the city of Margate, New Jersey. Work is part of the overall Absecon Island dune and berm project. Army Corps and contractor teams have made significant progress on temporary mitigation measures related to the basin areas between the bulkheads and the newly constructed dune in Margate. These areas were put in place to accommodate Margate's storm water management system; however water did not percolate as anticipated after heavy rainfall events.
  • Statement regarding Margate/Absecon Island project

    PHILADELPHIA (AUG. 10, 2017) - Based on the Aug. 10 2017 decision by Judge Bumb, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District has directed Weeks Marine Inc. to resume beachfill operations in the City of Margate as part of the Absecon Island Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project. The dredge BE Lindholm is expected to return to work in Margate on or about Aug. 14, 2017. The Army Corps will continue to work with our sponsor, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the City of Margate to assist them with long-term storm water management solutions. During construction, the Army Corps will continue to employ mitigating measures to reduce impacts. The Army Corps team will continue to monitor the basin areas, gather data and analyze short and/or long term alternatives in cooperation with the NJDEP and community.
  • Army Corps updates water release schedule at Francis E. Walter Dam

    PHILADELPHIA (Aug 9, 2017) – The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District updated the 2017 Francis E. Walter Dam recreation plan. The Army Corps updated the plan, which states whitewater and fisheries releases will be scheduled if enough water storage is accumulated in the reservoir. Precipitation has enabled the Army Corps to schedule the 8th and 9th increments of the plan.
  • Army Corps awards final contract for Delaware River deepening project

    PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Contract No. W912BU-17-C-0020, Upper Reach B, to Norfolk Dredging Company in the amount of $50,273,354.50. This represents the 10th and final dredging contract for the Delaware River Main Channel Deepening Project, deepening the Delaware River federal navigation channel from 40 to 45 feet between Philadelphia and the sea. The project is a joint effort of the Army Corps’ Philadelphia District and PhilaPort.

    PHILADELPHIA (July 26, 2017) – The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District updated the 2017 Francis E. Walter Dam recreation plan.   • Students study snake population at the Francis E. Walter Dam

    WHITE HAVEN, PA – A group of graduate students from East Stroudsburg University partnered with the staff at the Francis E. Walter Dam in White Haven, PA as part of thesis work on rattlesnakes. The biological research involves measuring, tagging, determining the sex of the snakes and whether the females are gravid. Information gathered at dam will be used in a larger study that will help conservation efforts on the timber rattlesnake throughout the state of Pennsylvania.
  • Celebrate “Get Outdoors Day” at Blue Marsh Lake

    National Get Outdoors Day at Blue Marsh Lake will be held Saturday, June 10, 2017. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Berks County Parks & Recreation Department will offer a full day of outdoor activities from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area. More than 35 clubs and organizations will be on site to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day and Get Outdoors PA.
  • Philadelphia District recognized for commitment to safety

    PHILADELPHIA (JUNE 5, 2017) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District was recently recognized with the North Atlantic Division Commanding General's Safety Award of Excellence for its ongoing commitment to a safe and healthy work environment. The District is now under consideration for nationwide safety honors.
